This month we are celebrating our local community in Dorset and how you all pull together and care for one another in good times and in hard times! In good times, we think of the recent community-led groups who meet at the house to learn, share and create. The Craft Group has a small but dynamic group who support one another and have formed a strong connection. The Craft Group is a very caring space, and across a wide range of ages, many of the group find connection and a place to pursue their interests. The Ukelele Group was started by a local community member and runs on Monday afternoons, with a growing group of budding musicians and no upper age limit. If you are interested in either of these groups, please contact Dorset House.
In hard times, we think of the recent severe weather event that affected our area. There are still people facing the impact of damage and loss in our community, and we encourage them to seek support from those around them, from services and at Dorset House. However, the primary response we saw from our community was one of strength and generosity. People cared for one another and shared what they had, whether it was water or food, generators, electricity or time. What a great community we have! Dorset House has spent the last two weeks also responding to needs created by extreme weather and loss of power. During this time, we were able to provide food and water relief packages to 190 households and support community members with over 35 grant applications for financial support. |
